The social network Twitter is making a lot of efforts aimed at smoothing out the conflict with the Indian government and regaining its protection from liability for content posted by users. The next step in this direction was the creation of the position of “Complaints Officer”. Local residents will be recruited for this position, and their tasks will include monitoring compliance with Indian law and interaction with law enforcement agencies.
Earlier, the Supreme Court of India accused Twitter of violating the "Information Technology Law" and non-compliance with current regulations in this segment. As a result, the American company lost its protection from liability for content that users publish on the platform. This makes Twitter vulnerable from a legal point of view, since the social network will be responsible for the illegal content of users. Prior to this ruling, the Indian court and law enforcement officers repeatedly pointed out to Twitter to comply with applicable laws, but the company ignored the warnings.
The emergence of a new position does not mean that Twitter will return the right to protection from liability for user content. Local officials will first determine whether new hires can enforce the laws of the country. The next court hearing on this case will be held on August 10. Note that the companies Facebook, Google and Telegram have adopted new rules for regulating the segment in India and are trying to comply with them.
Twitter has soured relations with the Indian government lately. The social media giant has refused to remove posts criticizing local authorities and other content that violate applicable laws from its platform. Twitter is likely to have to adopt new rules, since the withdrawal of the social network from the country will mean serious financial losses.
