The profile division of the consulting company Accenture Security reported that in the first half of 2021, the number of cyber intrusions into the corporate sector increased by 125% compared to the same period last year. Moreover, in 54% of cases, private companies with annual revenues ranging from $ 1 billion to $ 9.9 billion became victims of such attacks.
The report was prepared based on data collected from Accenture's own customers. Cybercriminals used most of the time using web shell tools and ransomware, and a large number of attacks on resources in supply chains were also recorded. Companies in the United States (36%) suffered the most, followed by organizations from the UK (24%) and Australia (11%).
In terms of business, companies specializing in consumer products and services have experienced the most cyberattacks, while manufacturing, banking and healthcare have been slightly more fortunate. Robert Boyce, head of dedicated Accenture Security , noted that large companies are mostly limited to protecting only core corporate systems, paying less attention to local needs and leaving other participants in the supply chain vulnerable. He also noted that during the acute phases of the pandemic, hacker activity decreased for some time, but after companies returned to normal operation, the likelihood of cyber threats increased significantly.
In the malware segment, ransomware turned out to be the most common problem, accounting for up to 25% of the total. Moreover, in 23% of cases, insurance companies suffered from attacks of this kind, the threat was felt by suppliers of consumer goods and services, as well as telecommunications companies. Significant problems in the first half of 2021 were created by attacks through backdoors and droppers, as well as through malware designed to steal identity.
