Samsung unveils Exynos W920 chipset for wearable devices

Shortly before the premiere of the new wearable devices at the Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung unveiled another chipset for this category. The Exynos W920 is specifically designed for wearable devices and will likely be used with Wear OS 3.0.

The Samsung Exynos W920 is the successor to the Exynos 9110 platform, launched by the South Korean tech giant about three years ago with the first version of the Galaxy Watch. The new chip will run the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic.

The variant is manufactured using Samsung's latest 5nm EUV lithography process. The W920 received two ARM Cortex-A55 cores and a Mali-G68 GPU. The company claims that the model is 20% faster than the Exynos 9110 in CPU benchmarks and 10x faster in graphics processing.

It is expected that the novelty will be able to support devices with display resolutions up to 960 × 540 pixels. Additionally, there is a low-power Cortex-M55 core, which is responsible for the "Always-on Display" function. There is an integrated 4G modem, a global satellite navigation system, a Wi-Fi b / g / n module and Bluetooth 5.0.

In addition to the new Exynos W920 chipset, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic will be the first to use Wear OS 3.0, which Samsung has jointly developed with Google. More information will be announced at the start of the Galaxy Unpacked event.

The novelty is housed in a modern, compact FO-PLP package, allowing manufacturers to fit larger batteries into thinner smartwatches. The system integrates a power management controller and, for example, LPDDR4 memory.
