The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) has called on scientists to join a five-year project to study the mechanics of an "ultra-large spacecraft stretching for miles . " As part of this project, it is planned to consider the possibility of building a huge ship, the assembly of which will take place in orbit.
The super-large spacecraft can become the main strategic aerospace equipment for the future use of space resources, the study of the mysteries of the Universe and a long stay in orbit," the project description says. It is assumed that a modular spacecraft will be built in orbit, for the delivery of the components of which it will be necessary to carry out several launches of carrier rockets from the surface of the Earth. This approach was chosen due to the fact that the super-large ship would be too heavy to put it into orbit fully assembled.
Researchers are tasked with designing a ship to reduce its weight as much as possible, thereby reducing the number of launch vehicle launches and the total cost of construction. Researchers must also ensure that the structures are controllable to limit displacement, deformation and vibration of the ship's component parts during assembly.
The development of a project for a huge spacecraft is one of ten projects, for the implementation of each of which $ 2.3 million will be allocated. It is worth noting that China is investing heavily in the development of its space program. Thanks to this, the Celestial Empire was able to become the second country to successfully deliver a research rover to Mars. In addition, China is working on the creation of its own orbital station, the first module of which has already been launched into space, and its construction should be completed next year.
