During the Galaxy Unpacked 2021 event, new information was revealed about the Bixby voice assistant , which Samsung Electronics continues to develop.
Samsung's virtual assistant was first announced in March 2017 alongside the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 +. In May 2017, Samsung announced that Bixby would be used in the Family Hub 2.0 refrigerator line, making it the first non-mobile virtual assistant product. In October of that year, Samsung announced Bixby 2.0, rolling it out across the company's entire line of connected products, including smartphones, TVs, and refrigerators. As of April 2018, Bixby was available in over 195 countries.
Bixby is 35% faster on Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3
Although the company has subsequently drastically scaled down its marketing of its digital assistant, Samsung continues to improve Bixby's features.
During Galaxy Unpacked 2021, it was announced that Bixby can run faster on new Samsung devices. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3 models were mentioned. Samsung said that Bixby will run 35% faster than before.
The improvements achieved are the result of voice processing now performed locally on the device rather than through Samsung's servers. Local voice processing on new Samsung devices is done using the built-in NPU (Neural Processing Unit) engine, which is part of the new smartphone chipset.
The improvements to Bixby are echoing the approach Apple has taken with Siri since iOS 15. Google has also been handling some requests to Google Assistant on the devices themselves since 2019. Some Alexa smart speakers are capable of local processing.
Bixby has also improved its interface. The digital voice assistant now takes up less screen real estate, mimicking the approach of the newer versions of Google Assistant and Siri.
