For more than a year, a member of the insider and jailbreak community has acted as Apple's double agent, according to Motherboard. He secretly provided the Californian company with information about the sources of the leaks and the success of iPhone jailbreak enthusiasts.
It is reported that Andrey Shumeiko, known under the nickname YRH04E, who shared Apple inside information and advertised sellers of stolen pre-production devices of the company, secretly provided the Apple Global Security team with information that could help the company fight leaks and punish those responsible for them.
In May 2020, after an early version of iOS 14 was leaked, Shumeiko provided Apple with information about the person who helped orchestrate the leak by purchasing a stolen iPhone 11. The device was running an early build of iOS 14 for internal testing by Apple employees.
In the summer of 2020, Shumeiko leaked Apple to its own employee working on Apple Maps, who offered to sell access to the company's internal account used to access corporate email and other commercial data. Shumeiko said that he kept in touch with this employee and later learned that he was fired from Apple.
The double agent said that he expected financial gratitude from Apple for his work. There was no reward from the Californian company, as a result of which he decided to disclose his role as a double agent.
