Apple was the protagonist of yet another controversy after two employees of Pegatron, one of its partners, have posted on the web intimate photos found on an iPhone that had been sent for repair.
As a result, the giant was ordered to pay millions of dollars in compensation to a 21-year-old student who resided in Oregon (United States).
The cell phone had been shipped to an Authorized Repair Center in California, run by Pegatron, where two employees had access to the stored content, including the photos in question.
They posted material on Facebook featuring what can be considered one of the biggest privacy breaches ever to occur at an iPhone repair center.
Confidentiality indemnity
The total amount of compensation was not disclosed, but an article published by The Telegraph mentions a multi-million dollar amount. The victim's lawyers allegedly demanded at least $5 million in negotiations and even threatened to sue Apple for invasion of privacy and emotional distress.
Tim Cook's company opted to resolve the case and included a confidentiality clause in the agreement that prohibits the matter from being discussed as little as the amount paid is disclosed.
The matter only came to light due to a legal dispute between Pegatron and its insurers, as the former had to reimburse Apple for the agreement, but the insurers refused to cover the costs. Apple was mentioned in a Pegatron lawsuit against these insurance companies, having the need to confirm the incident.
An Apple spokesperson noted that the firm takes customer privacy and security very seriously and follows a number of protocols to ensure customers are protected during repair processes
