Epic Games judge harshly criticizes Apple in the presence of Tim Cook

Tim Cook appeared in court at Apple and Epic Games and said the company would charge users of the App Store in its current form or in any other form possible. The judge then slammed the tech giant.

Judge Gonzalez-Rogers criticized the App Store's policies for a few minutes , saying , "You say you want to give control to users, so what's wrong with people being able to choose cheaper content options?" He asked Cook what the problem was with making Fortnite game cheaper by paying in-app or linking to another website. "If we allow developers to link like this, we will lose our monetization system," Cook replied. We need returns for our intellectual property. "We have to manage 150,000 APIs and various development tools, along with processing costs."

Cook said if the number of payment methods in the App Store increases, the company should look for intermediary payment companies instead of processing transactions and paying developers. "Then we have to look for another way to get paid," he said. We need to look at the situation in a different way, how we should bill and communicate with the developers. "Such a process does not seem necessary."

Rogers said getting a fee for in-app payments from games is a "choice" if other apps do not charge such a fee. "Obviously there are other solutions," Cook replied. "But overall, we think this is the best way." The judge said that Apple is increasing the number of users of the games, but after the initial connection, it is the games themselves that keep the users. From now on, Apple will only make money from them. "You have no competition in in-app payments," Rogers added. Apple CEO said people can buy games on other platforms, the explanation is left to the developers themselves.

Rogers said he did not believe Apple had reduced the App Store fee for the Corona virus , which he said the company was forced to do because of the lawsuit. "The decision was made because of the corona virus," Cook said. "Of course, I also considered the issue of the court." "You do not seem to have a specific competitor, so you do not see the need to work for the developers," the judge concluded.

The trial of Apple and Epic Games ends Monday and weeks later.
