Huawei in deep trouble for 'spying' Uighur citizens in China

Huawei was testing its facial recognition technology using Artificial Intelligence (AI) that includes an "alarm" on citizens of the Uigure ethnic minority. The Washington Post exposed the case based on the IPVM report.

The accusation finger points at Huawei, the largest Chinese mobile devices and network device manufacturers, in addition to the most varied electronic devices, which is said to have worked with the fellow Megvii in population surveillance systems.

The case was exposed by "The Washington Post"

More serious is the fact that the function "Alert Uigure" was found, identifying the members of this minority ethnic group and practicing the Muslim religion. The system would recognize individuals from this ethnic group based on facial recognition.

The Washington Post piece is also supported by documents published by Huawei on its website. The documentation is available to the public and will have been found with a harmless Google search.

At issue is a project for the implementation of facial recognition systems, with a demonstration of their operation to be also pointed out. The system employs Huawei hardware and algorithms (AI) developed by Megvii.

The accusations against Huawei are based on the IPVM investigation

IPVM discovered and widely disseminated the "alert", indicating that the facial recognition technology will be used for population control purposes. In the shared video listed is the conclusions, in addition to the respective website.

We recall that the Uighurs are an ethnic minority native to northwest China. This group has been the target of severe political repression by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), with several efforts to identify and track its members.

Since 2017, at least 1 million Uighur citizens have been displaced to a network of several detention camps in Xianjiang province. There, they would have been forced to attend the dark "re-education programs" and indoctrination.

These detention and re-education camps existence has been categorically denied always, but the images captured by satellite point in the opposite direction.

Finally, since 2019, this issue has been denounced, with the United States imposing sanctions on China in the months following the first reports. It is also not the first time that Megvii is associated with facial recognition algorithms, nor with population screening programs. However, this is the first time that Huawei has been involved in this issue.
