With the recent rumors of a new HomePod more affordable than the current one in sight, we wonder what functions Apple can cut out of this device to decrease its cost. And it is that at the software level it is a fairly limited device due to its dependence on another device with iOS or iPadOS, but at the hardware level it is a speaker with great sound quality and whose capabilities are what give it value.
This new HomePod would be a smaller and more affordable device than the current one , which sees how it cannot compete due to its price with other similar devices such as the Amazon Echo or the Google Home and Nest. Therefore, Apple has to reduce its cost as much as possible, but without sacrificing those features that make the HomePod the smart speaker it is.
For this reason we have compiled a list with the 5 features that Apple should include in a future HomePod "Mini" if it wants this to be a success .
5- Possibility of creating a surround sound thanks to the interconnection of several HomePods
One of the tricks that play in favor of the competition of the original HomePod is the price. For a fraction of the cost of the Cupertino smart speaker, one can do with an entire Amazon system with their Echoes, and link them together to act as if it were a multi-speaker sound system.
Apple should not lose sight of this feature. We all know that although they will not lower the price of the new device to the level of the competition, we do hope that the reduction will be enough so that users can be encouraged to purchase more than one HomePod for your homes, offices etc. And so they can be used together. Today this is possible with the original HomePod, but its high price makes it prohibitive to have more than one in most cases.
4- Third party support and greater connectivity
The HomePod nourishes the possibilities that Apple offers to give the best of itself. The problem is that the user is not always willing to give in to Apple, so opening up to other music apps like Spotify should be a priority for a new device. Apple must let its users choose who they want their service providers to be instead of imposing Apple Music or iTunes on their HomePod, thus giving alternatives.
In addition to this, another factor that could be decisive would be being able to connect the HomePod to other devices such as a television . Thus facilitating the use between both devices naturally, and giving video capabilities. Playing both possibilities could make the new affordable HomePod a much more competitive device.
3- Compatibility with your own headphones
In the same way that the Amazon Echo can use the iPhone's bluetooth to play music on the AirPods, Apple should work to offer a similar possibility in its HomePod , allowing that when you listen to music on the HomePod and put on the AirPods it will automatically be transmitted to them until you take them off and play again on the speaker.
2- Learning to reproduce daily habits
If something is missing from HomePod, it is the ability to learn from our habits, the ability to anticipate or satisfy our needs without having to request them. For this the HomePod should use artificial intelligence to learn about what we use at all times . Is it early in the morning? Read emails and turn on the radio. Is it time to cook? Play music, and so on according to our behavior throughout the day to anticipate what we want.

1- Personalization regarding privacy
Even though the HomePod currently has a Siri command to request it to stop listening to its surroundings, many users would like to have a physical way to disconnect the microphones , as the competition already offers. Whatever the physical appearance of the new Apple speaker, a physical button to disconnect its interaction feedback is something necessary.
At the moment we do not know what plans Apple has for its future HomePod "Mini" but we hope it will include some, if not all, of the benefits that we have presented here. The HomePod is a great device, but it needs to evolve and adapt to the market to better fit and be a more viable option.
