It's not easy being a Uber Eats driver in Mexico. In the last 6 months, at least 5 drivers have been fatal victims of road collisions. About 12 other drivers suffered varied injuries.
The situation is so harsh that the drivers of Uber Eats are in protest. The drivers of the platform joined those of Rappi, the Colombian app that competes with Uber Eats.
Drivers from other apps like Glovo and Caviar have suffered fatal accidents or injuries in more Latin American countries like Argentina and Chile. In Spain and some US states accidents have also been reported.
Drivers of food delivery applications are at great risk
Drivers in Mexico are extremely unhappy, demanding better working conditions. The wages are unstable, health insurance is practically non-existent, which further aggravates the risks of death and injury.
Most drivers work unofficially, getting the wages 'under the table'. Mexican law does not help these workers much because in the eyes of the government, they are freelancers, without the benefits of a normal worker.
Accidents already with drivers of Uber Eats have already become habitual in the cities of Mexico. Motorists suffer broken bones, destroyed or damaged motorcycles and armed robbery during deliveries. All this to receive between 30 to 60 pesos per delivery (€ 1.40 to € 2.79) .
In Mexico, 13 people out of 100,000 die on the road
Mexico has a higher death rate on the road than the United States. Also, it is extremely easy to be a Uber Eats driver, just need to have the app, a motorcycle and register. As such, there are hundreds of daily drivers making delivery, aggravating the country's road situation.
Uber is not doing much to improve the situation.
Uber seems to have a "hand-off" approach. This is because according to The Verge, 5 injured drivers at work have sought compensation from Uber without an answer. There are also the families of deceased drivers, who continue to await response from the company.
In addition, drivers and affected families can not afford lawyers to put Uber in court. It is indeed a regrettable situation, caused by the conditions of the country and driven by Uber.
