World Health Organization recognizes addiction to gaming with an illness

At a congress this week, the World Health Organization has just officially recognized a new disease. Classified as "Game Disorder," this United Nations organization has just declared gambling addiction as a disease.

This condition had already been classified by the WHO in January of last year, but only now it becomes official. Therefore, "Game Disorder" will take effect from January 1, 2022.

According to the World Health Organization, this new disease is characterized by a behavior linked to recurring gaming. This spectrum included both online and offline gaming on computers, consoles or smartphones.

How WHO intends to detect this new disease

The organization also gives us the guidelines for this type of disease can be diagnosed. First of all, we have the control that the games play over us. Second, increasing the priority given by an individual to the games, to the detriment of other activities.

Lastly, the continuation of this practice even when it is having negative effects on an individual's life. This included our social, family, professional life and others of great importance.

Naturally, this decision was contested by entities directly related to the industry. The gaming industry has already spoken out against the ruling, calling it a hasty and contradictory study.

Additionally, entities such as the Entertainment Software Association have come to extol the benefits to the economics, politics and even academic that gaming can bring with it. These statements also serve as a protest against the WHO decision.

The WHO justifies the decision

In view of these expected statements, WHO has already indicated the reasons for its statement. This organization says that this decision was made on the basis of real evidence and advice from various experts in various fields.

It is often said that everything is wrong when it is too much. Gaming can actually bring benefits to people, but when it's over-practiced, it also has its negative effects.

Therefore, we always appeal to the good sense of our readers. If you like to play, I believe you should do it, but it does not harm other important areas of your life.
