The month of April was not easy for users of Microsoft e-mail services. Earlier this month, hackers stole the credentials of a company support employee and logged into Outlook.com, MSN, and Hotmail accounts. Invaders were able to access personal information from users, read email content, and even view contact lists. And since then, reports have surfaced from users who say hackers have also stolen their crypto-coins - the good old phrase "anything bad can get worse" never fell so well.
According to one of the victims, Jevon Ritmeester, the invaders took a Bitcoin from their wallet. It sounds like little, but the crypto-coins is equivalent to more than $ 6,000 at this time (or $ 22,262). In order to steal the virtual currency, hackers have redefined Ritmeester's password on a Cryptocurrency Exchange site, a business that allows the exchange of crypto coins for cash and other assets.
Ritmeester says he did not have two-factor authentication enabled. A Microsoft spokesperson told the Motherboard website only that "customers who believe they have been affected beyond what has been described in the company notice should contact Microsoft support staff for assistance."
"I feel that Microsoft is trying to cover up and is not taking it seriously," said Ritmeester. "I am planning to file an incident report and hold Microsoft responsible for financial damage and the fact that too much of my personal information may leak in the near future."
So far, the total number of affected users and the amount of stolen crypto coins has remained a mystery. On Reddit, two users also complained about the loss of crypto coins. "My [cripmoeda] account has been hacked as a direct result of the Microsoft email hacking," user shinratechlabs wrote in early May. According to him, more than $ 25,000 in crypto coins were lost.
"The same thing happened to me, but with a much smaller amount stolen," user mickey_ficke reported in the sequel. Neither user responded to the Motherboard interview request, however.
