Instagram launches @shop channel to promote products for sale on the platform

As social networks gain more and more space in people's lives, these platforms improve and deliver increasingly captive roles. Proof of this is that Instagram , which recently introduced Checkout (a feature that makes it possible to purchase items directly from the application), and now the social network is taking a step forward in online shopping solutions by launching its virtual store account official: @shop.

Apparently, the @shop profile was opened with the intention of showing and presenting different fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands that are found around the world. In a statement sent to HuffPost, the app said the channel is a kind of "celebration of small businesses and the creators behind them." He also explained that the content posted on this page will be entirely based on the preferences of the buyer community of Instagram.

The @shop had 13 publications and about 37,000 followers.


There, you can find bags, beauty products, among others aimed at the female audience. An application representative told HuffPost that brands will not be able to pay to appear on their account because it will be based entirely on community trends.

Another interesting point of this account is the fact that the posts have subtitles that provide information about each brand, product, and quotes from the founders. Eva Chen, Instagram's director of fashion partnerships, explained to the Business of Fashion website that most people who enjoy shopping enjoy reading and listening to the stories behind the products displayed on the screen because they make potential customers run out becoming more interested.

Still, she says that while @shop is a kind of virtual showcase for brands, it remains a social networking account, and as such, people want to hear human stories. Chen, who is also an influencer of Instagram with more than 1 million followers, also said the target audience of @shop are women in their 20s and 30s. Thus, she says that it will have a friendly tone and destined, mainly, to highlight the brands and the companies that constructed its market through Instagram.

@shop can be accessed through any environment - by app or via the web. However, the purchase links for each product are only being displayed in the mobile app, not appearing (at least) in the version of Instagram for browsers. These links direct the users to the official pages of the stores where they can purchase the product disclosed there.
