Executives from some of today's largest technology and social media companies including Apple CEO Tim Cook and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg have been called to an international committee that will focus on spreading false news and misinformation fever that hits the internet. The meeting will be held in Ottawa, Canada in May.
Under the official name of the International Committee on Disinformation and False News, the group is made up of parliamentarians from Canada, the United Kingdom, Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, France, Ireland, Latvia and Singapore and will be received by the House of Commons for the second time. In addition to Cook and Zuckerberg, she has also been invited to Facebook COO, Sheryl Sandberg, and several other CEOs of today's top brands.
Among the names on the list are Google CEO Sundar Pichai; Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos; Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey; and executives of WhatsApp and Snapchat, among other companies. Last year, Zuckerberg did not attend the committee's first meeting in Westminster, England, sending a Facebook vice president instead. However, in this edition, substitutes will not be allowed, according to the chairman of the House of Commons ethics group, Bob Zimmer.
For him, it is extremely important to hear top executives to get the answers the committee seeks. "We will not be accepting testimony from regional representatives at this meeting, as previous experience has shown that their responses have proven to be, quite frankly, inadequate," Zimmer said.
It is worth noting that the timing of this event is extremely important for Canada as the country has been dealing with a number of warnings from the Canadian Center for Cyber Security. The state of alert is due to the suspicion that the public opinion of the Canadian society may be being manipulated with suspicious activities in the online environment, which will influence the elections.
