Facebook pulls its Onavo VPN app from the Play Store

Facebook has been increasingly involved in privacy issues. Almost every month new situations arise from the "suspicious" social network behaviors.

In this sense, Facebook decided to remove the Onavo VPN application from the Google Play Store. This app was purchased by the social network in 2013 for about 200 million dollars.

VPNs are private networks that help users maintain the privacy of their data on public Wi-Fi networks, for example. However, everything indicates that the opposite could happen.

The Onavo VPN app has already been removed from the Apple App Store

First, all this started a few weeks ago with the application "Facebook Research". This is an app that collects all kind of usage data. Needless to say, Apple banned the application because it did not conform to its policies.

Secondly, it looks like this app was based on the Onavo VPN. Therefore, Facebook took advantage of the wave to withdraw the application and avoid more problems, apparently.

In the application description we had to "add an extra layer of data security and encryption when using public networks". However, at the end was the phrase "traffic data could be collected to improve the operation of Onavo and other Facebook products."

However, we have to be realistic. Any application collects user data. The point here is the context. The social network is displaying too many suspicious behaviors for those who claim to care about privacy.

The truth is that on Facebook, we are the product. But expanding that concept to other applications may not be the right attitude. Be that as it says goodbye to Onavo VPN in Google and Apple application stores.
