Sony wants to improve face recognition with laser technology
Satoshi Yoshihara, head of Sony's sensors division, said that during the next summer they will increase the production of its own series of 3D sensors, designed to improve the performance of the cameras of the new smartphones.
Although the applications are many, especially in the field of augmented reality, Yoshihara emphasizes that the most interesting aspect of the new technology is that linked to the three-dimensional recognition of the face. Unlike most current technologies, which projects an invisible grid of dots, read by a special sensor, Sony's solution is based on a series of laser pulses, with a similar principle to the localization of bats.
The sensor measures the return time of the laser pulse, thus creating a three-dimensional image of the surrounding environment, up to 5 meters away. In this way, the system can be used in the dark and above all drastically reduces the space occupied in the front of the smartphone, facilitating the work of engineers who are looking for a way to get a really full-screen design.
Even Apple seems intent on using the new Sony sensors, which could allow a decisive step forward in both security and photographic quality, with a more accurate recognition of the objects framed.
