How to disable Smart HDR and control HDR manually on iPhone XS / Max

Lovers of photography cannot help but rejoice at the appearance of the Smart HDR function with better color rendering, greater saturation and more precise details in the photo. New smartphones automatically activate Smart HDR when the function's performance can be "most effective", according to Apple. Below we describe on how to disable the function of Smart HDR.

What does Smart HDR mean

High dynamic range (HDR) is a technique of computational photography, which improves the dynamic range in images with a large contrast. The function makes several consecutive frames with different exposures, and then combines their best parts into one photo. As a result, more precise details are obtained.

Smart HDR makes the colors even better, and the shaded parts of the pictures are more detailed. The feature works on the basis of machine learning, neural engine and advanced camera sensors on the new iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.

Function HDR worked imperfectly at first, but then it became better.

And when Apple presented its own neural engine with the A11 Bionic processor, HDR technology became so good that its work was automated on the iPhone 8 and newer.

How to disable Smart HDR

On new smartphones in the 2018 lineup, the Smart HDR function is always active and does not store original photos with the HDR version. The function can be disabled and managed by HDR manually.

1) Open Settings on your iPhone XS.

2) Select the Camera section.

3) Click the switch next to the Smart HDR to gray.

After that, your iPhone will no longer activate Smart HDR automatically. When Smart HDR is disabled, a yellow HDR button appears in the Camera application. As before, it can be used to manually control the function.

For best results with HDR shooting, do not shake your iPhone and try to avoid movement.

You can disable Smart HDR if you often take pictures in low light and they turn out bad. However, in most cases, the function should work fine.

On the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR, each photo is practical using Smart HDR, as good as it is.

How to manage HDR manually

iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus - the first models with automatic mode HDR, possible due to the work of the neural engine Apple.

On these models, you can disable HDR in Settings ? Camera .

On earlier models, you control HDR manually. To disable the feature in the Camera, click the HDRicon at the top of the screen and select the option you want .
