Gigabyte has released an external RTX 5090 for $2999 - in games it is 18-27% slower than the desktop one

Gigabyte has released the Aorus AI BOX external docking station with a GeForce RTX 5090 graphics card. For connection, the novelty uses a Thunderbolt 5 connector. The device can also be connected via USB4 thanks to the backward compatibility of the two interfaces.

The Aorus AI BOX with the RTX 5090 is equipped with a Waterforce liquid cooling system with a 240mm radiator, and also has a built-in 850W power supply. Gigabyte notes that its efficiency is equivalent to the 80 Plus Gold standard (efficiency above 90%). The equipment includes one HDMI 2.1b, three DisplayPort 2.1b, one LAN port, as well as two Thunderbolt 5 (USB-C) and three USB 3.2 Gen (two on the rear and one on the front). The Aorus AI BOX with RTX 5090 is priced at $2999.99.

According to Notebookcheck, which tested the Aorus AI BOX with the RTX 5090 in conjunction with a laptop based on Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX, the external graphics card in synthetic tests turned out to be 18% slower than the regular desktop version of the RTX 5090 in the Founders Edition reference version used in a desktop PC based on Ryzen 7 9800X3D. At the same time, the Aorus AI BOX with the RTX 5090 is significantly faster than the mobile version of the RTX 5090, equipped with 24 GB of memory.

In games, the Aorus AI BOX with the RTX 5090 is 27% slower than the regular desktop RTX 5090. Such a significant difference in performance, despite the same characteristics as the desktop version of the card, is due to the limited bandwidth of the Thunderbolt 5 interface.

In Notebookcheck tests, the Aorus AI BOX eGPU with the RTX 5090 consumed up to 575 watts of power.
