The US House of Representatives Revenue and Expenditure Committee is set to release former President Donald Trump's 2015-2021 tax returns on Dec. 30, which the Treasury previously handed over to lawmakers. This was reported on Tuesday, citing a representative of the committee, Reuters.
The committee, in which the majority is Democrats, voted for the publication of these documents on December 20. However, as Reuters explains, the declarations were not immediately made public due to the presence of confidential information in them, it will be hidden during publication.
Earlier, the lawyers of the previous American leader appealed to the US Supreme Court with a demand to prohibit the transfer of declarations to legislators in the said committee. Trump officials have insisted that the Democratic congressmen's request for declarations is illegal and is motivated only by the desire to extract "political gain."
In November, the Supreme Court refused to grant this request and allowed the Ministry of Finance to submit these documents to the committee. Trump, under various pretexts, refused to release his tax returns, even though his political opponents have been demanding that he do so since the 2016 presidential race. He stated that the companies he owns are subject to regulatory audits. According to Trump, in this regard, it is undesirable to publish information about tax deductions.
The New York Times in September 2020 claimed that its journalists had read more than 20 years of Trump's tax returns. From them it allegedly follows that in 2016 and 2017 he paid a total income tax of only $ 1.5 thousand. The ex-president said that these allegations are not true.
Trump, 76, a Republican, said on Nov. 15 that he would run again in the 2024 presidential election.
