Azerbaijan has updated the number of deported citizens from Iraq and Syria

This year, 66 women and children have been deported to Azerbaijan from Iraq and Syria. This was announced today, December 27, at a press conference on the results of 2022 by the Chairman of the Board of the Azerbaijan Social Services Agency Vugar Beybutov.

Those deported to their homeland are mostly the wives and children of militants of terrorist groups operating on the territory of two Arab countries, including the Islamic State (IG, an organization banned in the Russian Federation ).

“This year, 66 people were repatriated from these countries to Azerbaijan, of which 64 were placed in institutions subordinate to the agency,” the official noted.

Since 2018, 418 people have been repatriated from Iraq and Syria to Azerbaijan, Behbudov informed.

Recall that since 2013-2014, when the IS terrorist group seized vast territories in Iraq and Syria, hundreds of residents of the largest Transcaucasian republic left Azerbaijan for the "holy war" as IS militants and other extremist organizations. According to the information of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Azerbaijan, provided in October 2018 during a meeting with representatives of the International Organization for Migration (a specialized agency of the UN), 1,477 citizens of the republic (1,136 men and 341 women) left for Iraq and Syria in previous years and joined various terrorist organizations.
