For Android users, a popular function in the Whatsapp messenger service could soon cost money.
Kassel - So far, the Whatsapp messenger service has been free * - but that could soon change with a popular function. As reported by the WABetaInfo portal, relevant information was found in a beta version of the app.
Accordingly, backing up chat histories for Android users could soon be subject to a charge. Because there are indications that Google could limit the free use of Google Drive for Whatsapp backups* in the future. Users would then have to pay extra for backing up large chat histories.
Whatsapp: Backups soon no longer free with Google Drive?
So far, Android users can use unlimited storage from Google Drive to back up chats, because backups were not counted against the available 15 GB. However, according to WABetaInfo, the source code of a beta version of Whatsapp indicates that Google wants to change exactly this setting.
The code suggests that WhatsApp backups will also count towards the limited 15GB storage in Google Drive in the future. If this storage space is exceeded, users would have to delete old backups in the future - or pay for the storage space. This step is not surprising. For example, Google recently abolished unlimited storage space for the popular Google Photos service.
Whatsapp: Beta source code suggests that the backup change will be implemented in the near future.
When exactly the implementation will take place and whether Google will really introduce a limit for backups in Google Drive is still unclear. However, the beta source code suggests that the change will not be long in coming, reports Focus.de. According to the code, WhatsApp users would then receive a notification when the Google Drive storage is “almost full” and “full”. Then at the latest you should react. (Sarah Neumeyer, Diana Rissman)
