Underwater Photographer of the Year 2022 Winners Announced [PHOTO]

Summing up the results of the annual competition Underwater Photographer of the Year 2022, the organizers of the event published the works of its finalists. The winners were selected based on an analysis of over 4,200 photographs submitted by participants from 71 countries.

The winner of the competition was Rafael Fernandez Caballero from Spain, who captured whale sharks. The picture titled "Dancing with the Giants of the Night" was taken in the Maldives at night.

Capturing five whale sharks in one frame is already considered superluck for a photographer, but catching them at night is simply incredible,” said Tobias Friedrich, one of the jury members.

Another shot of an ocean predator landed one of the contestants a runner-up in the Portrait category. After overcoming a number of challenges associated with the aggressive behavior of great white sharks, Matty Smith managed to capture his dream photo off the coast of Australia. He called his work "The Big White Split".

No less impressive photographs were presented in the Behavior category. For example, the works “Circle of Life” (above) and “Hunting” (below) are the result of many years of observation of the underwater world: the behavior of predators and their prey.

Separately, in the Underwater Photographer of the Year 2022, the nomination "Sunken Objects" was singled out. The photo below shows the Kittiwake wreck in Grand Cayman, which was discovered by Croatian diving instructor Carlos Macas.
