The music festival that fascinates Italy for five days, started on February 1st live from Sanremo for a 72nd edition. Complete guide to an international hits reveal event.
Eurovision has everything to envy to the Sanremo festival. It was by taking inspiration from the format of the festival of Italian songs that the European competition was born in 1956, four years after the festival which has taken place every year since 1951, live from the Ariston theater in Sanremo on the Ligurian Riviera, Italy. First broadcast on radio, the event moved to television from 1954, still on Rai. The festival is immediately propelled into orbit. It becomes one, if not the most popular show in Italy. A stainless rendezvous bringing together millions of viewers each year, entire generations of Italians behind their small screens, kept spellbound for five consecutive evenings.
On February 1, 2022, the 72nd edition of the Sanremo festival opened, the second threatened by the shadow of the pandemic, but with the key, a success that should like every year (or almost) be guaranteed.
The five evenings of the Sanremo festival
The festival is divided into five performance evenings. During the first two (February 1 and 2), the artists present their songs. The third evening (Thursday February 3) is dedicated to the pieces in competition. On the fourth evening (Friday February 4), the singers will perform songs from the Italian and international repertoire, from the 1960s to today. Finally, at the end of the fifth evening, the name of the winning song of the Sanremo Festival 2022 will be revealed.

The process of the vote for the best Italian song

For the last two evenings, the public vote and the so-called “Demoscopia 1000”, made up of 1000 people selected according to criteria of age and geographical origins, are added.
The “super guests” of the 2022 festival
Under the spotlights of the Sanremo festival, the stars awaited by viewers also parade. This year, Laura Pausini opened the first evening of the event. Also on stage are the Maneskin , a Roman group that won the Sanremo Festival and Eurovision 2021, as well as beloved Italian personalities from the small screen.
On Thursday, it will be the turn of journalist and anti-mafia writer Roberto Saviano to take the stage at the Ariston theater to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the terrorist attack in Capaci, committed on May 23, 1992 by the Sicilian mafia.
From Sanremo to international hits
The temple of Italian song has the gift of propelling winning songs to the rank of international hits. Nel blu dipinto di blu, Non ho l'età, Perdere l'amore … canzoni that have become icons , still hummed decades later…
