China Shifts Lunar Station Construction Timeline To Overtake US

While NASA postpones the return of a man to the moon as part of the Artemis mission indefinitely, the Chinese side is accelerating its plans to master the satellite. It is assumed that the first lunar research station will be built by the end of this decade.

Earlier, the construction of a lunar base within the framework of the Chang'e-8 mission was planned for 2035, but now they have decided to accelerate the implementation of the project. The new deadline is 2027. To master the Earth satellite, an autonomous mobile research station is already being created, capable of covering a distance of up to 1000 kilometers. In addition, technologies are being studied that make it possible to use 3D printing for the construction and maintenance of the colony, using materials available on the Moon. It is planned to use a nuclear installation as an energy source.

Unlike Artemis, China's lunar program involves the establishment of a base in caves to take advantage of their protection from meteorites and radiation. NASA plans to build its base on the surface of the satellite. In addition, China decided not to create an intermediate lunar orbital station, as NASA plans to do. Instead, astronauts will immediately go directly to the moon.

Recent studies of lunar activity indicate that volcanic eruptions are possible on the satellite. This aspect must be taken into account when planning the location of the permanent base. In 2050, China plans to take the lead on the moon by partnering with countries such as Russia.
