Not so long ago it became known that on some Toyota cars, remote engine start from a key may eventually become a paid service - you need to subscribe to a paid service subscription. This was an unintentional move, the company said.
Earlier this month, it was reported that some Toyota owners could lose the ability to remotely start the engine with a key - triple-pressing the lock button. This has sparked a storm of outrage and fears that tampering with functions on internet-connected cars will become common practice, as will paid subscriptions.
The source of the problem was the DCM (Data Communication Module) hardware module, which is installed on models with cellular connectivity. It checks if the owner of the car has a subscription to services. Remote engine start is possible via the app, voice assistant or from the key. And in all cases, even when there is a command from the key, the module checks the presence of a subscription before starting the engine, although it is only necessary for the application to work and start using the voice assistant. The company said it is aware of the issue and is currently exploring the possibility of technically decoupling the key-driven engine start from the DCM. As a reminder, this function is absent in cars sold in Nigeria.
