This year, for the first time in its history, Telegram turned out to be the main messenger in 50 regions of Russia - now it is the undisputed leader, for example, in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Samara and Chelyabinsk regions, the Trans-Baikal Territory and the Chuvash Republic. But in the North Caucasus, WhatsApp is still the most popular with a share of 67%.
As noted by Megafon, over the past year messengers have significantly increased the total volume of mobile traffic - an increase of 87%. Instant messaging services are used not only for text communication, and voice communication is becoming more and more popular. At the end of the year, WhatsApp still retained its leadership in Russia, generating 48% of mobile traffic, and this is a decrease by almost a quarter. And Telegram showed an increase of 26% and stopped at 44% of traffic. Megafon believes that if the trend continues, then in early 2022 Telegram will lead the rating of instant messengers in Russia. The popularity of Telegram, experts are sure, is explained by the fact that the service not only combines means for communication, but is itself a news content channel.
Messenger Viber, according to Megafon, continues to drop out of the race, being content with third place. Only if in 2020 it created 11% of mobile traffic, then this year it was limited to a mark of only 6%.
