Yahoo ceases operations in China due to stricter regulation

American company Yahoo Inc. announced that it would cease operations in China due to "an increasingly complex business and legal environment . " According to available data, from November 1, all Yahoo services became unavailable for users of the mainland of the Middle Kingdom.

Yahoo ceases operations in China due to stricter regulation

“Yahoo remains committed to the rights of our users and a free and open Internet. We thank our users for their support, ”the American company said in a statement. Note that Yahoo has become the second major technology company from the United States, which recently refused to continue business in China. Last month , the last American social network represented by the Microsoft LinkedIn platform left the PRC .

In fact, Yahoo's departure from the Chinese market is hardly unexpected. The company began to roll back some of its services a few years ago, and in 2015 it closed its Beijing office. However, some of the company's apps, such as Yahoo Finance and Yahoo Mail, disappeared from the Chinese App Store back in October. The withdrawal of the American company from the PRC can be called symbolic, since some of Yahoo's services, for example, the web portal, were blocked in the country.

Obviously, the main reason for Yahoo and LinkedIn leaving China is the tightening of regulation by local authorities. This activity has been carried out by the government of the country systematically over the past months and affects the largest IT companies, both local and foreign.
