World's first iPhone with USB Type-C port sold for $ 86,001

Last month, enthusiast Ken Pillonel posted a video showing the replacement of the proprietary Lightning port in the iPhone X with a universal USB Type-C. As a result, he received a working sample of an Apple smartphone with a fully functional USB Type-C connector. The enthusiast put his creation on the eBay online auction. The smartphone sold for $ 86,001 today.

The high price at which the iPhone X with USB Type-C was sold is due to the uniqueness of the smartphone. Although Pillonel has posted a detailed progress report in the public domain on Github, in reality it will be quite difficult to reproduce it. Among other things, the process involves the integration of additional circuits into the iPhone case. And in the process, the smartphone itself can be disabled.

The auction started at $ 1, but by the end of the first day of trading, the price reached $ 3000. It is worth noting that there were several larger bids than the final price, around $ 100,000, which were withdrawn before the bidding concluded. A total of 116 bets were made.

Although the prototype has already been sold, Pillonel has previously stated that he intends to continue to work on improvements such as fast charging of the iPhone via USB Type-C, water resistance and recognition of connected accessories.
