The UK government announced on Tuesday that it intends to conduct a full-scale investigation into the takeover of the Cambridge-based chipmaker Arm by chipmaker NVIDIA.
Nadine Dorries, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sports, has ordered a second phase of an investigation into NVIDIA's acquisition of Arm from Japan's SoftBank Group. Over the next 24 weeks, the Office for Competition and Markets will study possible violations of antimonopoly laws associated with the transaction, as well as find out if its implementation poses a threat to the national security of the country. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) of the United Kingdom, after the end of the first phase of the investigation, said that they had serious concerns about the prospects for the completion of the transaction.
Commenting on the start of the second phase of the investigation in the UK, an NVIDIA spokesman told CNBC that the company will analyze the CMA's findings on the impact of the deal on competition following the results of the first phase of the investigation, and will continue to cooperate on this issue with the UK government. “The second phase of the (investigation) process will allow us to demonstrate that the deal will help accelerate Arm and stimulate competition and innovation, including in the UK, ” said an NVIDIA spokesman.
Last month, the European Commission launched its own in-depth investigation into the deal, which is also being investigated by US and Chinese regulators.
