On the sidelines of the COP26 conference in Glasgow, the Romanian President and the US Special Representative signed an agreement to build a six-module small nuclear reactor plant in Romania. The 77-MW modules of the American company NuScale were selected as the project. The NuScale MMR in Romania is expected to be commissioned in 2028, and then to extend the experience to other countries of the European Union.

It should be said that NuScale is considering Romania as a site for the construction of its small modular reactors from 2019. There is not a single working NuScale reactor anywhere in the world yet, but this does not prevent the conclusion of construction contracts. In particular, NuScale recently entered into an agreement on the construction of an SMR with two Polish companies, and most recently an energy company from Bulgaria began working with it , which also urgently needed compact nuclear reactors to modernize coal-fired power plants.
NuScale projects that nuclear power plant sites will contain 4, 6 or 12 modules. Romania is ready to start a project to build a 6-module power plant. But this is not the final decision. In January of this year, the Romanian company Nuclearelectrica, which will lead the project on behalf of its country, received a non-refundable grant of $ 1.28 million from the US Trade and Development Agency to identify potential sites in Romania for the placement of SMRs.
Going forward, Nuclearelectrica hopes to become a center for the dissemination of small modular reactor manufacturing and service technologies across the European Union, which will also include training for plant personnel. The time will come when numerous MMR complexes will grow like mushrooms throughout Europe. At least this is what the USA and Romania dream about.
