Rolls-Royce electric plane accelerates to 623 km/h

Rolls-Royce has managed to accelerate its all-electric Spirit of Innovation to a speed of 623 km / h. At the same time, the company noted that the new achievement makes this model "the fastest fully electric aircraft in the world . "

Rolls-Royce has submitted three applications to the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale to confirm the record-breaking achievements. The company wants to record the following achievements: acceleration to 555.9 km / h at a distance of 3 km, a speed of 532.1 km / h at a distance of 15 km, as well as an ascent to an altitude of 3000 meters in 202 seconds.

The Spirit of Innovation is the result of the Acceleration the Electrification of Flight (ACCEL) project, which Rolls-Royce partnered with Mercedes-Benz-owned electric motor and controller manufacturer YASA and aviation startup Electroflight. As for funding, 50% of the funds required for the project came from the British Institute of Aerospace Technology, as well as from a number of government agencies.

The aircraft reportedly uses a 400-kilowatt electric propulsion system and "the most power-hungry battery pack ever made in the aerospace industry . " The first test flight of Spirit of Innovation lasting 15 minutes took place in September this year.

The source notes that in recent years, many companies have emerged seeking to develop solutions for the aviation industry, helping to reduce the emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere. And this applies not only to electric aircraft. A hydrogen fuel cell aircraft was tested in the UK last year, and later Airbus unveiled three hydrogen fuel concept aircraft that could enter service by 2035.
