Artificial intelligence managed to recreate the painted over Picasso painting

Although the British startup managed to recreate the painting by Pablo Picasso, hidden by the colors of another painting - "Breakfast of the Blind", it is unlikely that the full-fledged demonstration planned in the online gallery MORF will take place. "The administration of the Picasso heritage", representing the interests of the numerous heirs of the master, opposed the initiative, according to Kommersant.

The restoration of the painting was carried out by a young startup Oxia Palus, founded by machine learning experts at University College London (UCL) - George Kann and Anthony Burached. For two years now, the company has been recreating works lost in one way or another - using X-ray and infrared scanning, 3D printing and neural networks, more than 20 works of various artists have been "brought back to life".

Hidden under the painting "Breakfast of the Blind", another painting was discovered in 2010. It is assumed that the artist, who was constrained in means at that time, had to save on canvases, therefore the paintings were probably painted on top of the already finished ones. At the time of the discovery of the hidden layer, technologies allowed only the general outline of the image to be seen.

Oxia Palus was able to virtually "separate" the layers of an image using digital processing, and a neural network specially trained in the artist's style completed the picture, after which the digital reproduction was 3D printed. It is argued that the technology can even imitate the manner in which the artist left strokes on the canvas. However, it is not possible to find out how much the picture really matches the original.

The owners of the company presented the finished copy on October 11, and on October 13 the reproduction was to be exhibited in the online gallery MORF. Shortly before that, the team was contacted by the so-called. The Picasso Heritage Administration, demanding that the demonstration be canceled.

“The disclosure of Picasso's work is a matter of copyright and, in particular, moral rights. This is an eternal right that belongs only to the heirs of the author. Moreover, an artificial intelligence that "learned" to paint like Picasso will never have the subtle perception of an artist whose skill is expressed on every blank canvas , "said Claudia Andrei, head of legal affairs at the Picasso Heritage Administration.

“To be honest, I think it's a little sad that our innovation was stifled in this way,” George Kann commented on the situation.
