Shadow of the Tomb Raider without Denuvo protection showed significant performance gain

A few days ago, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics updated Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider . The games received support for the latest DLSS technology, and also got rid of Denuvo. Dark Side of Gaming tested the performance of Shadow of the Tomb Raider without protection - it turned out that the game performed better.

For the test, we used a configuration with an Intel Core i9-9900K processor, 16 GB DDR4 at a frequency of 3600 MHz and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 video card. For the purity of the experiment, the authors did not use DLSS and ray tracing. The portal noted that Denuvo had an impact on the processor load.

At high settings at 1080p, the difference in average frame rate was 12fps. At low settings, the new version of the game received an increase of 17 frames per second. Officially, the developers have not indicated any optimization improvements in the patch description, so the increase in the frame rate is probably due to the removal of protection.

Square Enix has now rolled back the update due to compatibility issues with the latest NVIDIA drivers. But the patch is available in the beta version of the game, which can be enabled in the Steam settings.
