Netflix has recently increased its prices in Portugal. For example, in its most expensive plan, subscribers who previously paid 13,75 €, now have a monthly subscription of 15,75 €.
But the increases may not stop there, according to a proposal from the State Budget for 99. The document delivered by the Government this Monday provides that streaming platforms will have to pay an annual fee of 4 euros per subscriber starting next year.

“The operators of subscription television services are subject to the payment of a biannual fee of two euros for each subscription to access television services, which is a responsibility of the operators”, can be read in the document cited by Jornal de Notícias.
The referred point intends to act as an amendment to Law no. /99 of “fostering, developing and protecting the art of cinema and cinematographic and audiovisual activities”.
According to what is described, “the amount equivalent to 75% of the total amount owed by the subscription television service operators, in the first half of the year”, will be transferred annually to the Instit Auto do Cinema e Audiovisual (ICA).
Ai will have the purpose of financing “works of writing and development, production and co-production of national creative works, or in the acquisition of broadcasting, transmission and availability rights of national and European creative works”.
This measure, which will apply to services such as Netflix, HBO or Disney+, could thus also translate into increases for the final consumer. In the coming months we will have more developments on this proposed amendment to the law.
