This standalone app will now be served through the Microsoft Store, which means Microsoft will be able to update WSL independently of Windows … This, in turn, will allow Windows Subsystem for Linux users to get the latest updates faster and without having to update Windows itself.

Last year, Microsoft included a GUI WSL in Windows 10 for developers. However, it looks like the version of the app available in the Microsoft Store will only be usable with Windows 12. Microsoft does not mention Windows

Microsoft will continue to support the old version of WSL so that users can run it side-by-side with the new app from the Microsoft Store. However, the company ultimately intends to migrate all users to the new product.
