Microsoft ditches 3D emoji in Windows 11

Microsoft previously promised to install new 3D emoji for Windows 11 and several other products. However, now the company has abandoned its intentions at least for the new OS – flat or 2D emoji have been released in builds on the Dev Channel.

New emoji style for Windows 11 is very different from what Microsoft promised in July when it remembered the famous Clippy and announced plans to return it in an emoji set instead of a regular paper clip. And even a week ago, the British division of the company posted on Twitter images with three-dimensional emoticons. Now the plans have been given up, as confirmed by Microsoft Senior Program Manager Brandon LeBlanc: “For Windows 10 we use 2D versions ”. And in recent tweets, he says they used “the wrong graphics.”

The company did not explain why it decided to abandon 3D design in Windows 11, despite promises to implement it. Most likely for the simple reason that the flat version works better in many applications. In addition, the 3D version can display differently on different displays and resolutions, and the flat version will provide more uniformity for all Windows users 15.

However, 3D styling may still appear in other Microsoft products, especially Microsoft Teams, which already have animated emoji. And the developer nevertheless fulfilled his promise and replaced the standard paperclip image with his Clippy character. The new emoji set is currently only available in test mode on the Dev Channel, but will soon be available to all users.
