Currently, WhatsApp backups do not count towards the Google Drive storage limit.
But that could change soon with a limited plan of 2000 MB per user.
WhatsApp can allow users to manage the backup
The WaBetaInfo website, platform that following the updates and new features of Whatsapp, found that the WhatsApp application is working on a new feature. According to the same source, this new feature will allow users to manage their own content backups (messages, audio, video, etc.) received in the app.
The reason for the development of this feature it is not entirely clear, however the WaBetaInfo platform advances that this may be related to future storage limits for WhatsApp backups on Google Drive.
Still according to the same source, Google Drive may be getting ready to change the rules for WhatsApp users.
Apparently, WhatsApp backups may soon count towards the cloud storage quota. Once confirmed, users will be asked to switch to a limited plan of MB per user for their WhatsApp account backups.
This is bad news for all account holders in the chat app. But with this new feature now under development, users can manage their own backups, through some options that will be very useful in case of storage limit.
New WhatsApp feature allows the selection of contents that should be saved
Namely, the new feature may come to allow users to exclude some media contents from the backup. In other words, it will be possible to select the contents that should be stored in the Google cloud.
Remember that this storage limit on Google Drive for WhatsApp contents is not exactly new. Until 2018, quotas were limited. But on that date, the situation changed when the chat platform partnered with Google so that WhatsApp backups were not included in the storage available to each user.
