Previously, the company used data such as email address or phone number to link one person’s Facebook and Instagram accounts for advertising purposes. Now Facebook will stop linking accounts in this way if the user asks the company to do so, or will not use certain features that automatically link accounts together, for example, simultaneous posts on Instagram and Facebook. This change will not affect the daily or monthly active users of the platforms, which Facebook reports to investors on a quarterly basis.

Facebook hinted in a blog post that the move was aimed at keeping up with the upcoming privacy changes. The company says this update is in line with trends to give people more control over how their information is used for advertising. Changes come into effect on Monday.
