Apple unveils M1 Pro and M1 Max chips - 2x faster than previous-generation Core i9 and ultra-powerful GPUs

Apple held a big presentation today, at which, in particular, it presented the updated MacBook Pro 14 and MacBook Pro  16 laptops . The novelties are built on the new generation of Apple's single-chip systems - M1 Pro and M1 Max. Like the first generation of the M1 chip, both processors are built on the Arm architecture using a 5nm process technology.

Apple unveils M1 Pro and M1 Max chips - 2x faster than previous-generation Core i9 and ultra-powerful GPUs

Apple says the M1 Pro chip has doubled the memory bus and the memory itself operates at a higher frequency, which increases the throughput of on-board RAM to 200 GB / s, three times more than last year's M1 chip. According to the company, the M1 Pro is made up of 33.7 billion transistors, double the size of the M1.

The Apple M1 Pro uses 10 computing cores (8 efficient and 2 energy efficient), as well as 16 graphics cores with 2048 execution units. The company claims a 70% increase in computing and 2x the graphics performance over the M1 processor. MacBook Pro laptops based on the M1 Pro chip will offer up to 32GB of RAM.

Apple M1 Max Spec

The single-chip Apple M1 Max platform is equipped with the same number of processing cores. However, the chip has twice the memory bandwidth of the M1 Pro chip. It is 400 GB / s. The number of transistors in the processor is also almost 2 times more - 57 billion. This is the largest processor manufactured by Apple. Laptops based on it can be equipped with up to 64 GB of RAM.

The die size difference is due to the use of an even more powerful integrated GPU with 32 graphics cores, which provides a fourfold increase in graphics performance compared to the original M1 processor. In terms of computing performance, it is 1.7 times higher than in the case of the M1 Pro. Still, they have the same CPU. Also note that the graphics in the M1 Pro are also up to 7x better than the integrated Intel UHD graphics (Intel Xe generation) in a Windows laptop.

The improved efficiency of the new chips is also noted. For example, the Apple M1 Max draws 100 watts less than an unnamed high-performance discrete laptop graphics card. But such graphics are mostly found in massive gaming systems. Compared to compact professional notebooks, the difference in power consumption with comparable performance is 40%.

If we compare the new Apple chips with Intel solutions in the MacBook Pro of previous generations, then the difference is manifold. So, the CPU of the new products is 2 times more productive than the Core i9 in the older 16-inch  MacBook Pros, and also 3.7 times more productive than the Core i7 of the older 13-inch MacBook Pros.

In terms of graphics performance, the Apple M1 Pro offers 9x faster performance than the integrated Core i7 graphics in the 13 "MacBook Pro, and up to 2.5x the performance of AMD Radeon Pro 5600M discrete graphics in last year's 16" MacBook Pros. ... In turn, Apple M1 Max with even more powerful graphics offers superiority over the same GPUs, respectively, 13 and 4 times.

Apple introduced two updated models of MacBook Pro laptops: 14-inch with a screen resolution of 3024 × 1964 pixels and 16-inch with a resolution of 3456 × 2234 pixels. Both are ready to offer support for technology to dynamically change the display refresh rate up to 120 Hz. Both new products have a "bangs" with a webcam in the display. Laptops have lost the Touch Bar touchscreen display. However, the new items received a MagSafe connector, a full-size HDMI port, an SD card slot, and three Thunderbolt connectors.

The junior 14-inch MacBook Pro starts at $ 1999. For the 16-inch version, the company will ask from $ 2499. Pre-orders for the updated laptops will start accepting today.
