Apple may be working on a way for the iPhone camera to be able to detect autism even during early childhood.

Algorithm included on the iPhone for early diagnosis
The news advanced by The Wall Street Journal states that Apple intends to appeal to the iPhone camera to study the child’s facial expressions and behaviors, such as rocking back and forth, as potential markers for detecting autism.
The same source adds that this work is being conducted in conjunction with Duke University, located in North Carolina. The objective of this partnership is to create an algorithm that helps detect signs of the condition and allow for an early diagnosis.
Apple wants to ensure that privacy is respected
In order to ensure that privacy is fully ensured, Apple wants the algorithm created to work locally on the iPhone. All so that data remains on the device and is not stored in the cloud, in order to protect the privacy of users.
This news comes after the leak of information that Apple was working in the features of the iPhone’s camera to also detect emotional disturbances, such as depression and anxiety, or cognitive impairment.
For this specific project, the US company formed the already disclosed partnerships with the Biogen Pharmaceuticals and the University of California (UCLA).
