TSMC has confirmed that mass production of chips using the 3nm process technology will not begin until 2023. This will affect customer product lines. In particular, the iPhone 2022 will be released with 4nm processors.

TSMC confirms 3-4 months delay in 3nm process technology

Since 2014, Apple has been TSMC's main customer, and all of the Taiwanese manufacturer's new technologies have debuted in chips for the iPhone. TSMC's new production lines launched in April or May, and in September, the new iPhone model turned out to be the most progressive on the market. This happened in 2018 and 2020, but in 2022, when the launch of lines with a 3-nm process technology is planned, the Taiwanese contractor will not meet the deadline: the delay, according to preliminary data, will be 3-4 months. According to a statement from a TSMC representative, it was decided to postpone the launch of production until the second half of 2022.

As reported by Nikkei Asia, citing its own sources, the first customers for 3-nm solutions from TSMC will be jointly Apple and Intel. In the case of Apple, the first new processors will be used in the iPad, that is, the Taiwanese contractor really will not meet the iPhone time window.

As for Intel, as the company itself confirmed, work is currently underway on new-generation processors for both user machines and data centers: the launch of production is scheduled for the end of 2022, the implementation of chips will start in 2023, which fully complies with even the updated plans of the Taiwanese contractor. At the same time, the planned volume of production of Intel chips turned out to be more than the volume of ordering chips for the iPad. In this regard, according to sources, Intel may become the first customer for 3nm products.
