Former Uber executive Manik Gupta will oversee consumer services at Microsoft. Initially, he was entrusted with the development of Microsoft Teams, Skype and GroupMe, and he reports directly to Jeff Teper, head of Microsoft 365.
For four years, Mr. Gupta worked at Uber, overseeing the development teams of the branded application. In addition, he was Product Manager at Google Maps for seven years. He found himself in a new position thanks to his experience in developing services and applications focused on the end user.
Microsoft has always wanted to gain a foothold in this market by trying to absorb services like TikTok, Pinterest and Discord. Despite the fact that they are very different from each other, the company would be able to work with large communities of users, not limited to the Xbox environment. Other big players like Google, Amazon and Facebook have long entered this market through the merged services of YouTube, Twitch and Instagram. Microsoft executives understand that the company needs something similar.
In recent years, Microsoft has tried several times to strengthen its presence in the field of consumer services and products, but in most cases, projects have been closed. This happened with Groove Music (closed in 2017) and Mixer (closed in 2020), Kinect controller (discontinued in 2017), Microsoft Band fitness bracelet (closed in 2016) and Windows Phone mobile OS (support discontinued in 2019).
According to a published internal document, the head of Microsoft Satya Nadella (Satya Nadella) again decided to come to grips with the consumer segment. The release of Windows 11 is scheduled for October, Microsoft Teams is tightly integrated into the new version. The developer is betting on this service, which is likely to become one of the key products for consumers, while in Skype the emphasis is increasingly shifting to the corporate user.
