GM's investigation into the causes of the Chevrolet Bolt electric car fire has already forced the auto giant to recall more than 140,000 cars and allocate about $ 1.8 billion for these needs. As the investigation showed, all of them could be produced at several enterprises of LG Energy Solution.
The interim results of the investigation are summed up by Reuters , mentioning the involvement of two LG enterprises in the production of defective batteries. According to GM, the batteries supplied from LG's facility in South Korea had a broken separator shape and a torn anode contact. After the tenth Chevrolet Bolt fire, the American automaker said the defective batteries could have come from other LG facilities.
LG Chem in China could also supply defective batteries to customers. Hyundai has determined that more than 15 Kona EV fires may have been caused by a short circuit inside the battery cell. The automaker believes that the fault was the broken form of the contact of the anode. Hyundai will spend about $ 900 million to recall 82,000 electric vehicles to replace LG's batteries. The Korean manufacturer supplies such batteries to Ford Motor and Volkswagen, but they have not yet complained about problems with their reliability.
