21-year-old John Binns claimed responsibility for hacking the systems of the American mobile operator T-Mobile. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, the hacker said that he did not have to resort to complex tricks to hack, everything was done using the available tools.
Mr. Binns said that T-Mobile's data protection tools are “terrible,” because relatively simple, publicly available tools were enough to crack. With their help, he found the most vulnerable router in the company's system, after which, within one week, he managed to get to the subscriber base, which was stored in a data center near East Wenatchee, Washington state.
The hacker provided evidence that it was he who hacked the T-Mobile systems. According to him, this was done to create a "buzz" around the incident and to draw attention to his person. He stated that he had previously been abducted in Germany and taken to a psychiatric hospital. However, no evidence of this was found.
T-Mobile declined to comment on Mr. Binns' statements. The operator's representatives expressed confidence that the vulnerability in the security system has been closed . At the moment, it is known that as a result of hacking, the data of more than 54 million active, former and potential subscribers of the operator were stolen.
Earlier, a professor at Vanderbilt University said that over the past 4 years, T-Mobile has made at least 7 leaks of personal data of subscribers. Following the incident, a class action lawsuit was filed against the company .
