In October 2018, a class action lawsuit was filed against Google, in which the search giant was accused of negligence in protecting user data and trying to hide the problem of unauthorized access to data of users of the social network Google+. Now it became clear what compensation users will receive.
Recall that the social network Google+ has been virtually dead since 2014, but the search giant continued to serve the service for many years. It was later revealed that Google+ had disclosed the data of hundreds of thousands of users to third parties over the years. The Google+ data leak was active from 2015 to 2018 and allowed developers to have full access to data from the Google+ People API, even for private profiles.
The search giant was aware of the issue, but decided not to advertise it to avoid regulatory scrutiny. In 2018, Google was forced to admit that it had violated the privacy of more than 500,000 accounts. Google later reported a second data breach affecting 52.5 million users. Google+ was shut down in 2018 and is no longer a security threat.
The class action case was settled in June 2020, and Google agreed to pay the victims $ 7.5 million. Given that 1,720,029 users took part in the lawsuit, after court fees and other costs, each of them will receive $ 2.15.
