It became known about the plans of Foxconn, Apple's largest contract partner for the assembly of iPhone smartphones, to launch the construction of factories for the production of electric vehicles in 2022, which will allow it to compensate for the losses due to the slowdown in the growth of smartphone production.
The Taiwanese company intends to build factories in the United States, Thailand and possibly Europe, which, among other things, will supply components for startups producing electric vehicles.
“We plan to start mass production in the US and Thailand, respectively, in 2023, ” Foxconn chairman Young Liu told investors. " In addition to the US and Thailand, we are also in talks with possible locations in Europe as part of our global EV strategy."
According to Nikkei Asia, Foxconn is in talks with three states in the United States to build electric vehicle factories, one of which is Wisconsin. The state had previously focused on building a chip manufacturing plant, but could shift to electric vehicles as part of a new strategy.
In Thailand, Foxconn partnered with Thai oil and gas conglomerate PTT to develop a platform for the production of electric vehicles and components. By the end of 2023, the U.S. plant will be operational, with customers such as automotive startup Fisker.
Foxconn is expected to launch iPhone 13 smartphones in late August. The company remains the largest assembler of iPhone smartphones, and its plans to expand into the electric vehicle market means it could become Apple's strategic partner in manufacturing and assembling Apple Car.
