The metaverse that Facebook is building

A true virtual reality experience that looks like something out of a science fiction movie.

The digitization of our activities is clearer than ever. Every day we connect to the internet for personal, work or school issues. But there are still experiences in development that will allow us to get even closer to the digital world, among them the metaverse that Facebook is creating to unite physical, augmented and virtual reality.

According to The Verge, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has told his employees about his ambitious new initiative that goes far beyond creating a suite of connected social apps and the hardware to support them. Your mission is to build a set of interconnected experiences  that seem to come from a science fiction movie.

"What I think is most interesting is how these themes will come together into a bigger idea. Our overarching goal in all of these initiatives is to help bring the metaverse to life," Zuckerberg said.

The metaverse is a term coined in Snow Crash, Neal Stephenson's 1992 science fiction novel, the term refers to the convergence of physical, augmented and virtual reality in a shared online space. And in recent years there has been more talk about the subject, for example, in January 2020, an essay by venture capitalist Matthew Ball set out to identify the key characteristics of a metaverse and among them he mentioned spanning the physical and virtual worlds; contain an economy in its own right; and that users must be able to carry their avatars and assets from one place in the metaverse to another, regardless of who is handling that particular part.

Considering the above in theory, no company will execute the metaverse but rather it will be an " embedded Internet ", operated by many different actors in a decentralized way. But Zuckerberg wants to push that vision forward.

Facebook's vision

To meet the goal of creating the metaverse, Facebook divisions focused on products for communities, creators, commerce and virtual reality will work together

Zuckerberg's vision is to create an experience that encompasses social presence, office work , and entertainment . This would mean a huge opportunity for creators and people who want to work and live far from urban centers and who through these spaces will be able to access education or job opportunities.

However, it may not be the best time to carry out your plans as Facebook is at a time when the United States government is trying to divide its current company. They also plan to limit their ability to make future acquisitions or offer services connected to their hardware products.

Specialists also point out that the metaverse may not be very well received by users who are still beginning to understand the two-dimensional version of social platforms and a 3D version will pose new challenges.

Faced with this, Facebook has said that it is already developing new experiences that it will deliver through Oculus and that privacy should not be a problem, because applications on the device cannot access, store or view images of the world around people.

While finished applications will take a while to appear, the company expects mixed reality games and productivity tools to become relatively common when new development tools for Oculus appear that include the ability, in real scenes, to be able to project. images on flat surfaces, create composite layers that float in space, and even apply visual styles, similar to social media filters. For example, it will be easy to work on a virtual monitor to use with a real world keyboard or turn a home into a dream landscape by pressing a virtual switch.
