Xiaomi reveals the whole truth about 200W charging

Xiaomi has been one of the manufacturers that bet the most on the development of charging speeds in smartphones. And its latest technology lets you charge a smartphone at 200W with wires.

As revealed a few weeks ago, this technology allows you to fill a 4000mAh battery in just 8 minutes. Now the Chinese manufacturer has answered some questions from fans, revealing battery degradation numbers using this charging speed.

800 charge cycles at 200W can leave the battery at 80% of its capacity

In a question and answer session on the Weibo social network, the question was what would be the impact on the health of the battery with a charge of 200W. The brand reveals that 800 charge and discharge cycles will lead to a battery degradation above 80%.
As stated by Android Authority, these 800 cycles correspond to significantly two years of life. Which may mean that said 4000mAh battery has about 3200mAh capacity at the end of that time. The increasingly common 5000mAh battery would be like this 4000mAh after two years using this charging speed.

These numbers are thus in line with Oppo's 125W solution presented in 2020. This too spoke of a drop in battery capacity to 80% at the end of those 800 cycles.

For now, the truth is that being able to charge your smartphone at high speed comes with this big drawback of faster battery degradation. So what manufacturers should do is continue to trim these charging speeds until they become less harmful to the battery.
