Apple replaces registration password on sites with ID and Touch ID

Apple's Passkeys technology is set to replace the password when registering with various services so that users on sites that support the technology can register by simply choosing their preferred username and then authenticating via Facebook ID or Touch ID.

Apple unveiled new Passkeys technology at a developer event that allows users to sign in to sites without the need for a password via Facebook ID and Touch ID. Apple has now gone a step further and will replace the phone's sensors with a password replacement when registering on sites.

The technology will be tested on iPhone, iPad and Mac later this year. Related settings will be disabled by default and the user must turn on the feature.

Passkeys technology is part of the iCloud Keychain, which is based on the FIDO Web Authentication Protocol. Apple began supporting the protocol last year to allow it to sign in to an account without the need for a password. According to a table released by Apple, this highly reliable method can replace passwords and protect users against phishing attacks. Of course, if you use devices from other manufacturers, you may not be able to take full advantage of this feature and will need to return to using your password.

Of course, Google and Microsoft have also recently begun supporting login without the need for a password with biometric sensors or hardware keys such as Yubico. Microsoft announced a few months ago that about 200 million accounts are using password replacement methods. Apple has also provided an API for hardware keys in iOS 15 and Mac OS Mantry for developers.
